The premise of this book is not that the American political system has been corrupted or captured — it’s that it was designed from the beginning to serve the interests of concentrated wealth, and that what we observe today is the evolution of that design rather than a departure from it. Drawing on the notes from the Constitutional Convention, Madison’s own words, and quantitative analysis of delegate financial interests, the opening chapter establishes what the founders actually intended to build and why the system behaves as it consistently does.

From that foundation, the book extends Thomas Ferguson’s investment theory of politics — the framework that follows money from industry to candidates and shows that campaign contributions function as investments in policy rather than expressions of civic support — through the political landscape of 2019 and 2020. Both major parties serve industrial interests. The differences between them are largely rhetorical, designed to generate public consent for policies that advance those interests regardless of which party holds power.

The book then applies this framework to the specific political debates of the period. The Green New Deal, covered obsessively for months, was fourteen pages of goals with no plan attached — and almost no one in the media covering it, for or against, acknowledged that. The opioid epidemic, framed primarily as a failure of manufacturer marketing, is reexamined from the demand side through direct personal experience with prescribing practices. Medicare for All, popular as a slogan in 2019, is analyzed for why its most viable form — a public option — cannot exist within the current political structure. Popular mythology around tax policy on both sides is examined against the actual data.

The book also includes two proposals: an FCC media disclaimer requirement designed to make the financial motivation of broadcast media visible to viewers, and an early version of The Option, a framework for improving Palestinian circumstances that accounts for the actual strategic interests controlling the outcome.

Written and published during the period it analyzes, the book functions as both political analysis and historical document — the same mechanisms it describes operating in real time as it was being written.
